I don’t know much about football, but I know a thing or three about marketing. And I can tell you that point-after kicks are for losers. They don’t fit the image of the nouveau-riche Oregon Ducks. They should go for two points almost every time. Not because they’ll score almost half the time, making the gambit add up, but because it will land them the best recruits. Who wants to play for a team that leaves a point on the table after every touchdown, when they can play for the brash and bold Ducks, who see an opportunity to go for two points and wonder why anyone — much less everyone — would settle for one?

Two-point conversions will make great tee-vee, and that’s worth millions. It’ll make some of those announcers do math for the first time since high school, and what fun will that be? Plus it givesthe team valuable extra reps in the red zone, an area that causes some problems for the much-heralded “spread offense.” When you’re only a few yards from the goal, you can spread ’em all you want and it’s hard for your eleven guys to evade their eleven.

One of these four ideas will be developed into a column on Wednesday to be published in The Register-Guard on Friday. I’m asking you to help me choose between them. Between now and the end of Tuesday, leave comments here or send me an e-mail if you’d rather be more private. Or, at the very least, RATE the idea (and the others) so I know which one people like best. No promises, though. This ain’t American Idol. But I will post an entry on Wednesday to say which one I’m choosing (and probably why.) I plan to do this each week — often by Friday, but always by Monday, so visit often and tell me which idea intrigues you the most. Thanks!
