RG51.4 carols, sexism, and the archaic

December 15th, 2007 by dk

Christmas music may someday be Christianity’s most enduring legacy. But not if we insist on “updating” them, scrubbing them of embarrassments from the past or the awkward reminders that they aren’t from the present. Hark, hear ye: no age has it all figured out, including this one. Correcting our forefathers for not including our foremothers gives us permission to believe we won’t somehow look just as silly someday to our forebears. So leave it all in. We can roll our eyes if we choose, but better to remember from whence we’ve come. If we don’t tamper with the music of the ages, it’s a tad easier to feel that humility during this season.
