RG27.1 Olympic dreaming

June 29th, 2008 by dk

Hang the Olympic Trials. Eugene should begin the work now to bid for the 2020 Summer Olympics. We won’t really get our act together here until we know there are visitors coming, so why not shoot for the whole meal deal? Phil Knight will be in his mid-80s by then and Nike will be a world power afforded what most nations receive, and Eugene is the place he most calls home.

So maybe you can confirm some of these rumors about the trials?

    1. Attendance is about 50% of expected because people didn’t want to come to Eugene. (Evidently we offer few amenities… we’re too small)
    2. Low attendance is also due to negative feelings about China/Bejing, fuel prices, and a decline in overall interest in Track & Field.
    3. Farmers are breaking the no-field-burn oath because recent fire’s from yesterday’s lightening storms have done more damage to air quality than their burning?

    What a fiasco!

(I have no sources for these rumors other than wild speculation from neighbors, friends, etc.)

There’s no way Eugene could handle the Olympics even 12 years from now, even if we were preparing the whole time.

Portland might be able to handle it- and perhaps they could be coaxed to split the Track & Field portions off and shunt them down here.

Bish: Hayword has sold out every night so far and until Friday had been setting new attendance records each night. Calling it a “fiasco” might be a little presumptive on your part.
