One mayoral candidate says he got into the race because of them. Another mayoral candidate attacks the incumbent first on the same issue. The new city manager makes it known that they are a top priority for him as he settles into the job. Even characters in “Stone Soup,” a nationally syndicated cartoon strip drawn by our own Jan Eliot, are hitting them. Potholes have hit the big time in Eugene. It’s what everybody wants to talk about. It’s as if the two notorious pits that currently define our downtown somehow mated in the night and spawned all these mini-pits all across town, thousands of hungry mouths with no bodies, opening wider and snapping at any rubber that comes near, growing and hoping one day to be able to mate and then live quietly in the gated communities favored by their parents.
