RG17.1 George Lakoff is wrong

April 19th, 2008 by dk

George Lakoff is a celebrated communications guru, urging Democrats to “not think of an elephant.” He’s coming to the University of Oregon this Friday to give a lecture about his theories. He’s wrong. Not completely wrong, of course, but dangerously wrong nonetheless. He believes (and convinces others) that Democrats have simply not learned the lessons of “framing” that Republicans have mastered so well. He wants the left to speak clearly, simply, and directly. But the trouble is not that the left doesn’t listen. It’s that they can’t stop listening. Inclusiveness is a core value for liberals — everyone must be heard. Conservatives care most about expedience. They want to roll up their sleeves and get things done. So the advantage the right enjoys is inherent to their raison d’etre. But that’s only half of it. When Democrats are smarter than others in the room, they can’t help but show it. All those nuances and complexities must be noted.
