People are often taken by surprise by my libertarian leanings, but I don’t quite get why. To me, having freedoms doesn’t immediately convert them to rights that must be protected by the state. Instead, I think of freedoms as gifts and each of us should show ourselves to be worthy. As people who know me have heard (over and over), I consider myself a tax-and-spend libertarian. I like taxes, but I want less government. Ideally, government should be well funded to do not much. So my little run-in at the post office gives me opportunity to talk about accepting responsibility for the perilous freedoms we enjoy.
