RG07.3 economy arrives on time

February 10th, 2008 by dk

If you’ve lived in Eugene for any length of time, you probably know exactly how long it will take you to get anywhere. And you’re almost always right. Whatever traffic snarls we have, such as they are, can be counted on with haunting regularity. Weather is seldom a factor that needs consideration. Road repair almost never slows anything for more than a block or two. Even accidents almost never slow us down. It makes for a wonderful quality of life, arriving everywhere mostly on time. But consider this. In most towns, every arrival time has an “x factor” of 10-15 minutes — more in large metros. If you travel to three or four places each day, that would require you to set aside half an hour to an hour every day “just in case.” The fact that we don’t have to means that many days we have an “extra” hour that we didn’t have to spend in precaution. That’s a measurable benefit.
