I was fortunate to be one of the citizen panelists on hand to interview the three finalists to become Eugene’s next city manager. Actually, that’s slightly misleading. “Interview” gives the impression that there were questions and answers and there were. But the questions were submitted in advance, vetted by staff, arranged by staff, read by staff, and the answers were timed by staff. There was give and there was take, but there was no give-and-take. Some precautions had to be taken to ensure that we didn’t accidentally ask any illegal questions, but (as with so much in Eugene) it was at the end of the day over-engineered and sanitized, scrubbed clean of the contentions that make this place alluring to some and maddening to others. I suppose one could say the winner of the contest will find that out soon enough.
