David Brooks wrote this week about the powerful role played by disaffection and perceived powerlessness in recruitment for a nihilistic radical movement that relies on adherents’ self-immolation to accomplish its utopian ideals. He directed his argument toward ISIS or the so-called Islamic State, but every point he made explains as well or better why undereducated and poor whites are supporting billionaire Donald Trump to become the president of the United States.
