If Ernie Kent doesn’t return as coach of the Oregon Ducks, the decision will have come down to a matter of inches. Twelve, to be exact. Tajuan Porter became easier to guard this season, just when the team and Kent’s plan required him to step up. The 5′ 6″ guard didn’t drop his three-pointers with the same reliability because the 3-point arc was moved back 12 inches this year — from 19′ 6″ to 20′ 6″. Those 12 inches may not be a big deal for many players, but consider the plight of a player who is often a foot shorter than his opponent: the arc of the ball matters as much as the distance. If Porter stood a foot taller or if the 3-point line had remained a foot closer, Kent may not be inching toward unemployment this week.
