RG47.2 against Obama: his name

November 21st, 2007 by dk

We last elected a president with three syllables in his last name in 1960. How short has our attention span gotten? The Republicans have projected strength by — get this — nominating the man with the shorter name in every election since 1952, except one. Goldwater lost in 1964. Republicans have also given voters another powerful attractor: familiarity. Except for that ill-fated 1964, how many top-ticket elections since 1952 have not included a Nixon, Dole or Bush? Trick question. None of them. Sad to say, but Obama’s doomed. People won’t cheer for a name they don’t know how to say.
