Sometimes a story just needs telling. Other times you know it can’t be told as well by anybody but you. Jesse Springer’s rise as an editorial cartoonist is both those this week, especially because the essay will appear the same day that he will be redeeming his prize — a lunch with the incomparable Tom Toles. In the biz, that’s called a “news peg” — it’s what the storytelling hangs on. Since I’ve worked closely with Jesse for over a decade, it’s a story I can tell differently than anyone else.
And yes, it’s still a story about us, thanks to a twist that is reminiscent of the wacky ending of the original “Love Bug” movie.
