Quips, queries, and querulous quibbles from the quirky mind of Don Kahle

Why do people say 'after dark' when what they mean is 'during dark'? After dark would be when it's light again, right? * There are 10 types of people in this world -- those who read binary, and those who don't. * I'm rethinking the whole brown rice thing. What if it's just more white liberal self-hatred? Whole wheat, honey, unbleached flour. All better. Sez who? * Eugene should be HQ for White People for Diversity. We'll fight for diversity to be included in books, which is where we know to look for it. * Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, but give a man a pillow, and he'll dream of steak. * What can you say about a state that puts the town of North Bend 225 miles southwest of Bend? We rely on visitors for entertainment.

I use two measures for a good City Club program: the quality of the questions from the audience, and the amount of time people linger afterwards because conversations that have been sparked are just that compelling. The format City Club is using for debates doesn’t allow for questions in the usual way, so that’s no use. The program was finished at 1:20 or so, and a full hour later, there were knots of people chatting about what they heard inside the DAC, on the street, in the parking garage, and no doubt all over town. Kudos! Double kudos to the community, which turned out in droves. It was standing room only, and it was all political stripes. A proud moment for City Club and for Eugene. And yes, Jim Ray and Nick Urhausen did spot me afterward and come up to me (together!) to recognize that I was the scoundrel who suggested they should be included in the debate.
