Quips, queries, and querulous quibbles from the quirky mind of Don Kahle

Why do people say 'after dark' when what they mean is 'during dark'? After dark would be when it's light again, right? * There are 10 types of people in this world -- those who read binary, and those who don't. * I'm rethinking the whole brown rice thing. What if it's just more white liberal self-hatred? Whole wheat, honey, unbleached flour. All better. Sez who? * Eugene should be HQ for White People for Diversity. We'll fight for diversity to be included in books, which is where we know to look for it. * Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, but give a man a pillow, and he'll dream of steak. * What can you say about a state that puts the town of North Bend 225 miles southwest of Bend? We rely on visitors for entertainment.

Tonight (Monday), Eugene City Council will meet to decide between neighborhood-friendly narrow streets and bicycle-friendly bike lanes in the Crest Avenue area. Unless there’s a rip in the space-time continuum, one of these laudable goals will be denied tonight, at our new city manager’s first public meeting. Tomorrow, the Planning Commission takes up some of Hugh Prichard’s suggested changes for the city’s Downtown Development Code. Wednesday evening, there will be two contentious meetings to choose from. The Fairmount Neighbors will be meeting to discuss the university’s plans for a basketball arena and how the effects of that development will be mitigated for the neighborhood. And the city is also holding an open house to discuss changes they have contemplated for the short stretch of Willamette Street that remains one way: from 18th to 20th Avenues. When it comes to flashpoint controversies, we’re a Top-40 station, “where the hits just keep on comin’!” Welcome to town, Mr. Ruiz.
