Quips, queries, and querulous quibbles from the quirky mind of Don Kahle

Why do people say 'after dark' when what they mean is 'during dark'? After dark would be when it's light again, right? * There are 10 types of people in this world -- those who read binary, and those who don't. * I'm rethinking the whole brown rice thing. What if it's just more white liberal self-hatred? Whole wheat, honey, unbleached flour. All better. Sez who? * Eugene should be HQ for White People for Diversity. We'll fight for diversity to be included in books, which is where we know to look for it. * Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, but give a man a pillow, and he'll dream of steak. * What can you say about a state that puts the town of North Bend 225 miles southwest of Bend? We rely on visitors for entertainment.

In the past week, I’ve had four conversations with people that centered around how to “get things done” here in Eugene. Probably more than that, but four that I can count. The hiring of the new city manager was explicit in two of those conversations, implicit in the other two and many others. But that’s only half the story, because the city manager’s job is to direct the work of 1500+ employees, which is an important way of saying what’s true for any manager: they don’t actually DO anything (at least not themselves)! I was given the privilege of being one of the citizens able to “interview” the finalists when they all came to town in early February. I’ve taken this as an opportunity to give a first-person account of what I saw, but also to do a little bit to frame expectations for a man coming to do a difficult job.
