Quips, queries, and querulous quibbles from the quirky mind of Don Kahle

Why do people say 'after dark' when what they mean is 'during dark'? After dark would be when it's light again, right? * There are 10 types of people in this world -- those who read binary, and those who don't. * I'm rethinking the whole brown rice thing. What if it's just more white liberal self-hatred? Whole wheat, honey, unbleached flour. All better. Sez who? * Eugene should be HQ for White People for Diversity. We'll fight for diversity to be included in books, which is where we know to look for it. * Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, but give a man a pillow, and he'll dream of steak. * What can you say about a state that puts the town of North Bend 225 miles southwest of Bend? We rely on visitors for entertainment.

In the past two weeks, plenty of people have asked me if I think the people in power are swayed by my ideas. I doubt it. Maybe if I strike a note that follows something they already thought was smart, what I write may bump it up a few notches on their priority list. Or, for all I know, they want to be certain it was their idea and my mentioning something they were thinking about drives it down on the scale. Who knows? On the other hand, I wonder if regular people understand how complicated any small change for the city can become. This week, parts of me wanted to gather information on both ends and suggest something very tangible, while explaining that even small changes take time. So this is a Christmas piece: Christmas 2008. Wake me a year from now and tell me if it made any difference.
