Quips, queries, and querulous quibbles from the quirky mind of Don Kahle

Why do people say 'after dark' when what they mean is 'during dark'? After dark would be when it's light again, right? * There are 10 types of people in this world -- those who read binary, and those who don't. * I'm rethinking the whole brown rice thing. What if it's just more white liberal self-hatred? Whole wheat, honey, unbleached flour. All better. Sez who? * Eugene should be HQ for White People for Diversity. We'll fight for diversity to be included in books, which is where we know to look for it. * Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, but give a man a pillow, and he'll dream of steak. * What can you say about a state that puts the town of North Bend 225 miles southwest of Bend? We rely on visitors for entertainment.

Is it time for me to start repeating myself? I’ve tried hard to defy expectations with the columns for the past few months, staking different territory with each. But this week readers may notice similarities between this column and the October column profiling the Mennonites. Both draw from history that extends further than most of us usually think about, and both include an invitation. I hope both also exhibit hospitality, which is “diversity” put in the active voice. Not every week will I have the chance to use old English or quote the Bible in a column. So I’m taking the opportunity this week to recall some of the most memorable gifts given at the City Club of Eugene’s annual Holiday Gifts programs. This year’s version of the program happens the day the column appears, so maybe it will attract a few new faces.
