Quips, queries, and querulous quibbles from the quirky mind of Don Kahle

Why do people say 'after dark' when what they mean is 'during dark'? After dark would be when it's light again, right? * There are 10 types of people in this world -- those who read binary, and those who don't. * I'm rethinking the whole brown rice thing. What if it's just more white liberal self-hatred? Whole wheat, honey, unbleached flour. All better. Sez who? * Eugene should be HQ for White People for Diversity. We'll fight for diversity to be included in books, which is where we know to look for it. * Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, but give a man a pillow, and he'll dream of steak. * What can you say about a state that puts the town of North Bend 225 miles southwest of Bend? RG44 Christmas in November

We’re all about honesty here, right? I wrote about the logic of throwing Christmas parties in November, but my first draft included many details about MY Christmas party, which is happening this weekend. The personal details seemed charming to me, but only because I’ve been working to prepare for the party all week. Each midweek I send a draft to a few friends. Some ofthem saw this early version differently — as if I was describing one particular party, to which most people have not been invited. Elitism is not a flank I guard very often, and I missed it. Thank goodness for good friends — you know who you are. So I went back to whatever board it is that writers write from. I refashioned it at a higher level — less intimate and builtaround the “idea” of November Christmas parties. Maybe others will throw their own. November is the new December.
