Quips, queries, and querulous quibbles from the quirky mind of Don Kahle

Why do people say 'after dark' when what they mean is 'during dark'? After dark would be when it's light again, right? * There are 10 types of people in this world -- those who read binary, and those who don't. * I'm rethinking the whole brown rice thing. What if it's just more white liberal self-hatred? Whole wheat, honey, unbleached flour. All better. Sez who? * Eugene should be HQ for White People for Diversity. We'll fight for diversity to be included in books, which is where we know to look for it. * Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, but give a man a pillow, and he'll dream of steak. * What can you say about a state that puts the town of North Bend 225 miles southwest of Bend? We rely on visitors for entertainment.

Now is the time to give subscriptions to the nation’s only weekly humor magazine. Now is the time because we all give gifts this time of year, whether we want to or believe in anything or not. Now is the time because prices are lower than at any other time of the year. Now is the time because there are even lower prices when you give lots of them. ¶ Imagine getting ten people off your shopping list with one phone call and spending only a couple of hundred dollars. It’s really that simple. And if you’ve been thinking about picking up a shirt or a sticker or a button, now is the time for that too because all that stuff is half price if you buy a subscription at the same time. ¶ This year we’re trying one thing that’s different. We’ve added an a la carte menu so you can spend exactly what you want on somebody. It’s a buck an issue and you decide how many issues. So for that brother-in-law who always leaves the price tag on a gift “in case you want to return it,” you can match his generosity dollar for dollar. We’ll keep sending issues until your money runs out. -dk
